What Type of Drywall is Used for Showers?

When it comes to choosing the type of drywall to install in a shower or bathroom, there are a few different options to pick from. Ultimately, the drywall you choose for your shower or bathroom will largely be dependent on your needs, budget, and experience level of the person installing the drywall.

What Types of Drywall are Used in Showers and Bathrooms?

There are a few different types of drywall that one can choose from to install in a bathroom. Some of the most popular types are Blue board, green board, cement board, and purple drywall.

  • Blue board is a very common type of drywall used in bathrooms, most notably with a tile wall. Blue board is water-resistant, cheap, widely available, and quite easy to install. Moreover, the process to install blue boards is not that different from installing regular drywall.

  • Green board is another type of drywall that is not dissimilar from blueboard. Green board is also water-resistant, cheap, widely available, and easy to install. The main difference between green board and blue board is that green board is made from recycled materials, which makes it a fantastic choice for the environment.

  • Cement board, on the other hand, is actually waterproof, instead of simply being water-resistant, like blue board and green board. This means that cement boards can be used in showers or bathtubs since it can have water directly applied to it and will not sustain any damage, whereas blue board and green board cannot have water applied directly to it. This makes cement board the most durable type of drywall and a perfect choice for showers. However, it should be noted that cement board is more difficult to install than blue board or green board due to it being a heavier substance and it is more expensive.

  • Purple drywall is also water-resistant. Though it is more expensive than regular drywall, purple drywall is easier to install than cement board and resists water and mold better than greenboard.

All in all, there are many different types of drywall that one can choose from to install in their bathrooms. So long as the drywall is moisture and mold resistant, it will work well; however, as for drywall that will come directly into contact with water, it is best to use cement board.

How is Drywall Installed in Showers and Bathrooms?

The process for installing drywall in showers is not too different from the process of installing regular drywall anywhere else. Installing blue board, green board, or purple drywall all virtually follow the same process. The key difference is that a water barrier should be installed over the board or drywall in order to prevent any potential water leakage. To install cement boards, the process is also very similar to installing drywall. You need to be sure to use concrete screws instead of drywall screws and a water barrier should also be added in order to prevent any potential leaks.

In the end, cement board is the best choice when it comes to installing drywall around showers or bathtubs, whereas blue board, green board, or purple drywall are all fantastic choices for the rest of the bathroom. Don't hesitate to get in touch with
